আজ ১২ জুলাই, আজকের দিনেই সারা বিশ্বব্যাপী পালিত হয় মালালা দিবস। ২০১৪ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ১০ অক্টোবর, শিশুদের প্রতি অবিচারের বিরুদ্ধে ও শিক্ষার অধিকারের লড়াইয়ের জন্য মালালা ইউসুফজাই ও ভারতীয় সমাজকর্মী কৈলাশ সত্যার্থীকে নোবেল শান্তি পুরস্কার প্রদান করা হয়। মালালা ইউসুফজাই এমন একজন মহিলা যিনি সবচেয়ে কম বয়সে নোবেল শান্তি পুরস্কার পান। পাকিস্তানি শিক্ষা আন্দোলনকর্মী হিসাবে ১৯৯৭ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ১২ জুলাই উত্তর-পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানের খাইবার পাখতুনখোয়া প্রদেশের সোয়াত উপত্যকা অঞ্চলে শিক্ষা এবং নারী অধিকারের ওপর আন্দোলনের জন্য পরিচিত হন মালালা।
দক্ষিণ আফগানিস্তানের বিখ্যাত মহিলা পাশতু কবি ও যোদ্ধা মালালাই-এ-ম্যায়ওয়ান্দের নামানুসারে তার নামকরণ করা হয় মালালা, যার আক্ষরিক অর্থ "দুঃখে অভিভূত"।
