ভূমিকম্পে (Earthquake) কেঁপে উঠল ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া। উত্তর ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার () ২৬০ কিলোমিটার দূরে অবস্থিত সান ফ্রান্সিসকোও কেঁপে ওঠে কম্পনের জেরে। ৭ মাত্রার কম্পনে ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার উত্তর অঞ্চল কেঁপে উঠতেই তা নিয়ে আতঙ্ক ছড়ায় গোটা এলাকায়। ফলে সেখান থেকে বাসিন্দাদের সরানোর কাজ শুরু হয়। ৭ মাত্রার ভূমিকম্পে উত্তর ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া কেঁপে উঠতেই জারি করা হয় সুনামি (Tsunami) সতর্কতা। ফলে ভূকম্পপ্রবণ এলাকা থেকে ৪.৭ মিলিয়ন মানুষকে সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সরিয়ে দেওয়া হয়। ৭ মাত্রার কম্পনের পর কতগুলি আফটার শকে ওই অঞ্চল কেঁপে উঠতে পারে, সে বিষয়েও জারি করা হয়েছে সতর্কতা। যদিও সুনামি সতর্কতা জারির পরপরই তা ফের প্রত্যাকার করা হয় পরে।
