মার্কিন প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প বৃহস্পতিবার স্থানীয় সময় ঘোষণা করেছেন যে, আগামী মাসে কানাডা থেকে আমদানিকৃত পণ্যের উপর ৩৫ শতাংশ শুল্ক আরোপ করা হবে.। শুক্রবার রয়টার্সের খবরে বলা হয়েছে ৩৫ শতাংশ শুল্কের পাশাপাশি অন্যান্য বেশিরভাগ বাণিজ্য অংশীদারের উপর ১৫ শতাংশ বা ২০ শতাংশের একটি সম্পূর্ণ শুল্ক আরোপের পরিকল্পনাও করা হয়েছে।
কানাডার প্রধানমন্ত্রী মার্ক কার্নিকে দেওয়া এক চিঠিতে কানাডার উপর ৩৫ শতাংশ শুল্ক আরোপের সিদ্ধান্তের কথা জানিয়েছেন আমেরিকার প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প। তিনি জানিয়েছেন, ১ অগস্ট থেকে এই শুল্ক কার্যকর হবে। ট্রাম্প ওই চিঠিতে হুঁশিয়ারিও দিয়েছেন যদি কানাডা আমেরিকার পণ্যের উপর শুল্ক আরোপ করে সে ক্ষেত্রে যে তিনি হার বৃদ্ধি করতে রেয়াত করবেন না।
