অধিবেশনের শুরুতেই সমাজবাদী পার্টির প্রতিষ্ঠাতা-নেতা মুলায়ম সিং যাদব সহ প্রয়াত অন্যান্য নেতার স্মরণে এক ঘণ্টার জন্য লোকসভা মুলতুবি হয়ে যায়।
সংসদের উভয় কক্ষে শুরু হল শীতকালীন অধিবেশন (Winter Session of Parliament)। বুধবার রাজ্যসভার (Rajya Sabha) নতুন চেয়ারম্যান হিসেবে দায়িত্ব নিলেন উপ রাষ্ট্রপতি তথা পশ্চিমবঙ্গের প্রাক্তন রাজ্যপাল জগদীপ ধনখড় (Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar)

অধিবেশনের শুরুতেই সমাজবাদী পার্টির প্রতিষ্ঠাতা-নেতা মুলায়ম সিং যাদব সহ প্রয়াত অন্যান্য নেতার স্মরণে এক ঘণ্টার জন্য লোকসভা (Lok Sabha) মুলতুবি হয়ে যায়। সংসদের উচ্চকক্ষে ভাষণ দিতে গিয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদি (PM Narendra Modi) বলেন
"ভারতের উপরাষ্ট্রপতি এবং রাজ্যসভার চেয়ারম্যান হিসেবে 'মাটির সন্তান' জগদীপ ধনখড় ভারতের গণতান্ত্রিক মূল্যবোধকে সমুন্নত রাখতে সাহায্য করবে"

উপরাষ্ট্রপতি নির্বাচনে ধনখড়ের বিপুল জয়ের প্রসঙ্গ উল্লেখ করে মোদী বলেন, ‘‘উনি রাজ্যপালের দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন। সকলকে নিয়ে কাজ করতে পারেন। আমার বিশ্বাস, আমাদের সকলকে নিয়ে উনি এগিয়ে যাবেন। ওঁর মার্গদর্শনে আমরা সমৃদ্ধ হব।’
