শ্রাবণ মাসের শেষ সোমবারে উজ্জয়িনীর মহাকালেশ্বর মন্দিরে পুরোহিতরা 'ভস্ম আরতি' করেন। মহাকালেশ্বর মন্দিরে ভস্ম আরতির নিজস্ব একটি বৈশিষ্ট্য রয়েছে কারণ ১২টি জ্যোতির্লিঙ্গের মধ্যে এটিই একমাত্র জ্যোতির্লিঙ্গ যেখানে শিব লিঙ্গে ভস্ম প্রয়োগ করা হয়। তাই মহাকালেশ্বর মন্দিরে আরতিতে অংশ নিতে সারাদেশ থেকে ভক্তদের আসার অন্যতম প্রধান কারণ এটি। তাৎপর্যপূর্ণভাবে, শ্রাবণ মাসটি ভগবান শিবকে উৎসর্গ করা হয়। হিন্দু ক্যালেন্ডার অনুসারে, এটি চতুর্থ মাসে পড়ে। এই মাসের সমস্ত সোমবার ভগবান শিব ভক্তদের উপাসনা ও উপবাসের জন্য শুভ বলে মনে করা হয়।
