ইউক্রেনের ২৮ বছর বয়সী সাইক্লিস্ট কোস্তিয়া ডেনেকা (Kostya Deneka) মারা গেলেন বাখমুটের যুদ্ধে। ডেনেকা তার দেশকে রক্ষা করার জন্য যুদ্ধে যোগ দিয়েছিলেন এবং জানা গেছে যে ১লা এপ্রিলে একটি বোমা হামলার পর তিনি মারা যান। ইউক্রেনের পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় বাখমুটে গত ১০ মাস ধরে যুদ্ধ চলছে। এই শহরের কৌশলগত গুরুত্ব বিতর্কের চেয়েও বেশি। কিন্তু উভয় পক্ষই একে অপরের সেনাবাহিনীকে দুর্বল করে দিচ্ছে বলে দাবি করে আসছে। এটি রাশিয়ার আগ্রাসনের বিরুদ্ধে ইউক্রেনের প্রতিরক্ষার যুদ্ধ। আন্তর্জাতিক পেশাদার সাইক্লিংয়ে ডেনেকা খুব কমই পরিচিত ছিলেন, কিন্তু এখন তিনি ইউক্রেনের ক্রীড়ার শেষ মহানায়ক হয়ে উঠেছেন। ২০২২ সালের আগস্টে প্রায় ৮০ জন ইউক্রেনীয় অ্যাথলিট নিজেদের দেশকে রক্ষা করতে গিয়ে প্রাণ হারিয়েছেন। ডেনেকাকে আজ, রবিবার, কিয়েভ শহরের বেরকোভেত্স্কি ট্রেজারি এর 'অ্যালি অফ হিরো' তে সমাধিস্থ করা হবে।
