পারমাণবিক ও ক্ষেপণাস্ত্র কর্মসূচি নিয়ে জাতিসংঘের একাধিক নিষেধাজ্ঞার মধ্যে উত্তর কোরিয়া যে কয়েকটি দেশের সঙ্গে বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ সম্পর্ক বজায় রেখেছে, সিরিয়া তার মধ্যে অন্যতম। উত্তর কোরিয়ার নেতা কিম জং-উন (Kim Jung Un) সিরিয়ার প্রেসিডেন্ট বাশার আল-আসাদকে (Bashar al-Assad) শোকবার্তা পাঠিয়েছেন। তুরস্ক ও সিরিয়ায় ভয়াবহ ভূমিকম্পে প্রায় আট হাজার মানুষ নিহত হয়েছে। বুধবার পিয়ংইয়ংয়ের রাষ্ট্রীয় গণমাধ্যম এ তথ্য জানিয়েছে। উত্তর কোরিয়ার রাষ্ট্রীয় রেডিও নেটওয়ার্ক কোরিয়ান সেন্ট্রাল ব্রডকাস্টিং স্টেশন (Korean Central Broadcasting Station) জানিয়েছে, মঙ্গলবার প্রেসিডেন্ট আসাদকে পাঠানো বার্তায় কিম সিরিয়ার উত্তরাঞ্চলে শক্তিশালী ভূমিকম্পে নিহতদের প্রতি সমবেদনা জানিয়েছেন। এদিকে, কিম তুরস্কের প্রতি শোকবার্তা পাঠিয়েছেন কি না, তা নিয়ে উত্তর কোরিয়ার রাষ্ট্রীয় গণমাধ্যম থেকে কোনো খবর পাওয়া যায়নি।
