ভারতসহ সারা বিশ্বে এদিন নাগরিকদের পরিবেশ সম্পর্কে সচেতন করার জন্য আয়োজন করা হয় বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচির। ১৯৭২ সালে প্রথম পরিবেশ দিবস পালন করে জাতিসংঘ। এরপর থেকে প্রতি বছর পালন করা হয় এই দিনটি।
