১৯১৫ সালের ৯ জানুয়ারি মহাত্মা গান্ধী দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা থেকে ভারতে ফিরে এসেছিলেন, সেই দিনটিকে স্মরণ করে প্রতি বছর এই তারিখে প্রবাসী ভারতীয় দিবস পালিত হয়।
প্রতি বছর ৯ জানুয়ারি তারিখে ভারতের উন্নয়নে অনাবাসী ভারতীয়দের অবদানের কথার স্মরণ করে প্রবাসী ভারতীয় দিবস পালন করা হয়। ১৯১৫ সালের ৯ জানুয়ারি মহাত্মা গান্ধী দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা থেকে ভারতে ফিরে এসেছিলেন, সেই দিনটিকে স্মরণ করে প্রতি বছর এই তারিখে প্রবাসী ভারতীয় দিবস পালিত হয়। এই দিবসের প্রাক্কালে অর্থমন্ত্রী নির্মলা সীতারামন প্রবাসী ভারতীয়দের "ভারতের প্রকৃত রাষ্ট্রদূত" হিসাবে অভিহিত করেছেন । তিনি তাদের কাছে সর্বাধিক ভারতে তৈরি পণ্য এবং পরিষেবাগুলি ব্যবহার করার জন্য আবেদন করেছেন যাতে দেশের পৃথক ব্র্যান্ড বিশ্বব্যাপী প্রচার করা যায়।
