এই মন্দিরের সবচেয়ে বড় আকর্ষণ হল ভস্ম আরতি।শিবরাত্রির পুণ্য প্রভাতে মহা ধূমধামে পালিত হল সেই রীতি।একটা সময় চিতা থেকে ছাই তুলে এনে এই মন্দিরে হত 'ভস্ম আরতি'।তবে ভস্ম আরতিতে এখন আর ব্যবহার হয় না চিতার ছাই।
আজ শিবরাত্রি, সকাল থেকেই ভক্তদের ভিড়ে মুখরিত মহাকালেশ্বর মন্দির। ভক্তদের বিশ্বাস শিবের দ্বাদশ জ্যোতির্লিঙ্গের মধ্যে একটি রয়েছে এই মহাকালেশ্বর মন্দিরে। এই মন্দিরের সবচেয়ে বড় আকর্ষণ হল ভস্ম আরতি।শিবরাত্রির পুণ্য প্রভাতে মহা ধূমধামে পালিত হল সেই রীতি।একটা সময় চিতা থেকে ছাই তুলে এনে এই মন্দিরে হত 'ভস্ম আরতি'।তবে ভস্ম আরতিতে এখন আর ব্যবহার হয় না চিতার ছাই। বিশেষ এই আরতির জন্য গোবর থেকে ছাই তৈরি করা হয়। আরতি শুরুর আগে কাপড় দিয়ে ঢেকে দেওয়া হয় শিবলিঙ্গ। তারপর ছাই ভর্তি একটি থালা লিঙ্গের উপর দোলান মন্দিরের প্রধান পুরোহিত। যার জেরে ছাইয়ে ঢেকে যায় গোটা গর্ভগৃহ।
