প্রথমবার মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নাগরিক হিসেবে পোপ নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন রবার্ট ফ্রান্সিস প্রিভোস্ট (Pope Robert Francis Prevost)। রীতি মেনে তিনি নাম বদলেছেন। ভ্যাটিকানে রোমান ক্যাথলিক গির্জার প্রধান হওয়ার পর এখন তাঁর নাম পোপ লিও চতুর্দশ (Pope Leo XIV)। আগামী ১৮ মে আমেরিকার শিকোগোয় জন্ম নেওয়া ৬৯ বছর বয়সী নয়া পোপের অভিষেক হবে ১৮ মে। এরপর ২১ মে পোপ লিও চতুর্দশ সাধারণ মানুষের উদ্দেশ্যে ভাষণ দেবেন।
বিশ্বের ১৩৩ জন কার্ডিনালের মধ্যে অন্তত দুই-তৃতীয়াংশ ভোট নয়া পোপকে ভোট দিয়ে নির্বাচিত করেছেন। অন্তত ৮৯টি ভোট পেয়ে মার্কিন কার্ডিনাল রবার্ট ফ্রান্সিস রোমান ক্যাথালিক গির্জার প্রধান নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন।
