হিন্দু শাস্ত্রে মকর সংক্রান্তির (Makar Sankranti) গুরুত্ব চরম। শাস্ত্র মতে, ধনু রাশি থেকে মকর রাশিতে সূর্যের প্রবেশ হয় মকর সংক্রান্তিতে। এই পূণ্য তিথিতে সূর্যের উত্তরায়ণ শুরু হয়। সূর্য ছয় মাস উত্তরায়ণে ও বাকি ছয় মাস থাকে দক্ষিণায়ণে। মকর সংক্রান্তি থেকে শুরু হয় সূর্যের উত্তরায়ণ। শাস্ত্র বলছে, উত্তরায়ণ মানে দেবতাদের দিন। আর দক্ষিণায়ণে মানে দেবতাদের রাত। মকর সংক্রান্তিতে দানধ্যান করে পুণ্যলাভ বলে মনে করা হয়। সংক্রান্তি উপলক্ষে নিজের বাসভবনে গরুদের নিজের হাতে খাওয়ালেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদী (Narendra Modi)।
